The B-52s

The B-52s were an American new wave band which was famously formed in Athens, Georgia, in the mid 1970s. The original line-up consisted of Fred Schneider (vocals, percussion), Kate Pierson (vocals, keyboards), Cindy Wilson (vocals, percussion), Ricky Wilson (guitar), and Keith Strickland (drums, guitar, keyboards). Ricky Wilson died from AIDS 1985 and Strickland switched from drums to lead guitar.  The group evoked 1950s and 1960s pop sources, trash culture, and rock and roll. Schneider, Pierson. The band has had many hits, including " Rock Lobster ", " Planet Claire ", " Private Idaho ",  " Party Out of Bounds ", and " Love Shack ".

Adam and the Ants

Formed around 1977 the band existed in two incarnations, pre Bow Wow Wow and Post Bow Wow Wow. I saw the first incarnation in a very sparsely attended concert sometime in late 1979, weeks later they had changed personnel and were on Top of the pops! Adam Ant's first band were 'hijacked' by Malcom MacLaren and they joined and were fronted by Anabelle Lou Win in Bow Wow Wow, Maclaren's project at the time. From the early stuff I was a fan of the following, everything after the first album by the second group was pants! Young Parisians Whip in my Valese From the second incarnation of Adam and the Ants I liked the first album's tracks the stand out ones were as follows: Antmusic Kings of the Wild Frontier Dog Eat Dog

Iggy Pop and the Stooges

The On and Off vehicle for Iggy Pop and his nihilistic pre-punk band the Stooges. I got into them with their second album 'Raw Power' and I think this was their second iteration in the early/mid 70s after they were founded and broke up in the late 60s. At this time they were working with David Bowie who delilvered a polish that they previously lacked. Stand out tracks are: From 1969 'I wanna be your Dog' 'The Passenger' believe this may feature David Bowie ' Lust for Life ' - this is the Trainspotting Remix

The Slits

The Slits were a strange group, a lot of potential but never really got anywhere. I guess they'd say they didn't sell out but then they would wouldn't they. Key band members were Ari Up, Palmolive and Viv Albertine. Their first Album was 'Cut' and this was pretty good and worth a listen I remember two tracks that they did 'Typical Girls' and a remake of ' I heard it through the Grapevine'

Big Audio Dynamite

After Mick Jones was booted out of The Clash he teamed up with Don Letts and formed Big Audio Dynamite. I think the band had 4 albums but never got the recognition that they should have - Jones was hospitalised for several months after they began to make progress - if I remember correctly. Their big Hits were  E = MC 2  and Medicine Show both of which charted and were innovative in thei ruse of sampling and inclusion of various musical genres. E = MC 2 Medicine Show

The Housemartins

The Housemartins were a 1980s, indie group from Hull, probably best remembered for 'Caravan of Love' which made Number One and then the band's break-up and departure of Paul Heaton and Dave Hemmingway to form the Beautiful South. Their other hit was 'Happy Hour' , from 1986, as was the above!

Beautiful South

The Beautiful South were formed in Hull, in 1988,  from two former members of the Housmartins - Paul Heaton and Dave Hemmingway, one of eth Housmartin' roadies and a couple other guys.... They featured a female lead / backing singer over the years, the actual person changing  - initially   Briana Corrigan  for albums two and three after appearing as a guest vocalist on one, followed by  Jacqui Abbott  for the fourth to seventh albums, and finally  Alison Wheeler  for the final three Beautiful South albums. It's hard to pick out tracks from this group as I'm particularly  fond of them all but if I havd to pick (as I do here!) the this is the selection I would go for 'A Little Time' , from 1990 featuring Dave Hemmingway on Vocals. On the original track he was partnered by Briana Corrigan, in this video it is Alison Wheeler 'Rotterdam (Or Anywhere)' , from 1996 with lead vocals by Jaqui Heaton 'Perfect 10' is anther favourite, released in...

The Easybeats

This track by Australian band The Easybeats is another favourite of mine, I first became aware of the track when I heard a version done by David Bowie but then found out he'd covered it and I stumbled upon this version. I love this video as well, not much else to say
