Xmas

So this is a short summary of my favourite Christmas related songs, some old, some newer but all touched by that special Christmas Magic....

To be clear form eth start, the greatest ever Christmas Song is by a clear mile, The Pohgues' "Fairytail of New York", re-released mant times, with some of eth more controversial words dubbed or ignired. It is a true timeless classic in my opinion

After the Pogues come a couple of real classics that I just love to love, ironically both released in the same year - if my memory serves me well. Slade's "Merry Xmas Everybody" and Wizzard's "I Wish it could be Christmas Everyday".

Hanging around in the late 1970s we have John Lennon's 'Happy Xmas (War is Over)', another all time classic - I guess...

and we have the '
Christmas Wrapping' by the Waitresses.

Moving around in time again to about 1980, I have to include Jona Lewie's 'Stop the Cavalry', a big hit at the time and much better than Paul McCartney's take on the same subject a few years later.

Another step forwards in time gives us the Darkness' "Christmas Time (Don't let the Bells End)", high camp but great fun...

Back to the Seventies now with a blast of "I Believe in Father Christmas" from old rocker Greg Lake from supposed super group Emmerson, Lake & Palmer

Next is "Peace on Earth/Little Drummer Boy" recorded by David Bowie and Bing Crosby 1977 for Crosby's UK Xmas TV special. The song wasn't released as a commercial single until 1982, and a video clip of their duet from the TV special became an MTV staple for the remainder of the 1980s.

What amuses me about this is that it is so clear that Cosby has no idea of wo Bowie was, yet he steals the show...

Finally here's a piss take on the whole thing

The Psychedelic Furs

The Psychedelic Furs were a British new wave band founded in London in the mid to late 1970s, led by singer Richard Butler and his brother Tim Butler on bass guitar, the Psychedelic Furs are one of the many acts spawned from the British post-punk scene. Their music went through several phases, from an initially austere art rock sound, to later touching on new wave and elements of hard rock. Early tracks that I particularly liked included ' Sister Europe ' & ' India ' from their self-named debut album in 1979. The band had several hits in their early career. In 1986, filmmaker John Hughes used their song " Pretty in Pink " for his film of the same name. I saw them play at the Sports Centre in Crawley and then again later in Reading, whilst at Uni.

Dexys Midnight Runners were an English pop band with soul influences from Birmingham, who achieved major commercial success in the early to mid-1980s. They are best known in the UK for their songs " Come On Eileen " and " Geno ", both of which peaked at No. 1 on the UK Singles Chart, as well as six other top-20 singles. The original Dexys Midnight Runners were founded in 1978 in Birmingham, England by Kevin Rowland (vocals, guitar) and Kevin "Al" Archer (vocals, guitar). Both had been in the short-lived punk band the Killjoys. Rowland had previously written a Northern soul-style song that the two of them sang, " Tell Me When My Light Turns Green ", which became the first Dexys "song". The band's members were "Big" Jim Paterson (trombone), Geoff "JB" Blythe (saxophone, previously of Geno Washington's Ram Jam Band), Steve "Babyface" Spooner (alto saxophone), Pete Saunders (keyboard), Pete Williams (ba...
